Description
Bake a whimsical unicorn cake with colorful frosting and magical decorations. Perfect for birthdays and parties!
Ingredients
- 2 ½ cups cake flour (or all-purpose flour)
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 4 large eggs
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
- 2 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- ¼ cup milk or heavy cream
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- Gel food coloring (pink, purple, blue, yellow, etc.)
Instructions
1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans. Line with parchment paper.
2. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs one at a time, then vanilla.
3. Whisk dry ingredients together. Alternate adding dry and wet ingredients to butter mixture. Mix until combined.
4. Divide batter between pans. Bake 30-35 minutes, or until a skewer comes out clean. Cool on wire rack.
5. Beat softened butter until fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar, then milk/cream and vanilla until smooth.
6. Divide frosting into bowls. Color with gel food coloring.
7. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Frost the top, then add the second layer.
8. Crumb coat the cake and chill for 30 minutes. Frost the entire cake and create a smooth finish.
9. Create a unicorn horn from fondant or a sugar cone. Make ears from fondant.
10. Decorate with sprinkles, glitter, candies. Pipe frosting swirls for the mane. Add edible flowers.
